Miss Wong, 65, scavenges the streets of Hong Kong’s Sheung Shui area in search of disused cardboard to sell to local recycling plants. She starts her day at 7am and often works until 9pm, seven days a week. For her efforts, she receives about HK$41 per day. Wong is one of an estimated thousand senior citizens nicknamed “cardboard grannies” who collect and sell waste boxes and other scrap across nine of the poorest districts in the city.
Instead of enjoying their retirement, many elderly in Hong Kong struggle to live day to day. In fact, one third of Hong Kong’s elderly live in poverty.
The following card collections support the work local charities are doing to help in supporting the elderly in Hong Kong.
All profits from these collections will support charities like Chung King Ministries, Mighty Oaks, and our Spread the Love photowalks for the elderly in Hong Kong.
